We’re in New York! Or, well, Matt’s in New York, and I’m in New Jersey, and we’re looking for a place to live. The majority of our worldly possessions are in big metal boxes being held at a shipping depot somewhere in Brooklyn; the smaller remainder of our stuff made the trip with us, by car, from California to New York. We drove just shy of 3500 miles in seven days, passing through ninety-seven counties in twelve states (California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey).
The whole process by which we left California is kind of a blur at this point. I underestimated the extent to which packing and moving would take over everything–I feel like I’ve lost two whole weeks of my life. The week before we moved was kind of a whirlwind, a combination of sorting and packing the apartment, seeing friends, and taking advantage of Bay Area attractions (the Scharffen Berger chocolate factory, Napa Valley, and a lot of our favorite restaurants). Mostly packing, though. We have a lot of stuff, and we moved using self-pack shipping containers, which means that we spent the better part of two days just moving things around inside the pods, trying to make sure that everything was packed securely enough to survive the move.
I’m working writing up an account of the trip, but that’s going to take a few days. Until we find an apartment, I’m staying at my parents’ house, where my internet access is limited. My time is limited, too–I’m pretty much apartment-hunting all day and finishing freelance work in the evenings. But I’ve arrived safely, I had a great time on the drive east, and I’m looking forward to what comes next.

Welcome to New York! If you need any help finding an apartment, let me know; we live in Inwood (the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan) and absolutely love it, and it’s cheap and apartments are big enough for lots and lots of bookcases. Happy to provide guided tours of the city, too. Drop me an email at rosejasperfox@gmail.com.
No WAY! I am slowly wading back into LJ, and am a few months into the opposite move you just made. Is it possible we are simply avoiding each other, and neither coast is big enough for the both of us?
Good luck!
Welcome! Granted, I’m out of town right now, but still. It’s nice to have you closer.
Do you think you’ll make it to Readercon? I’ve decided to go.
